Awka, Anambra —The Anambra State Government has launched a campaign urging citizens to ensure massive voter turnout for the upcoming 2025 gubernatorial election. The government emphasized that high participation is critical to guaranteeing democratic legitimacy, accountability, and the sustainability of ongoing development projects across the state.

The appeal comes as political activities begin to heat up ahead of the highly anticipated contest to elect the next chief executive of the state.

Speaking at a press briefing in Awka, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Dr Law Mefor, stressed that the state’s progress hinges on the ability of its citizens to actively choose their leaders.

“We are calling on every eligible registered voter—the youth, the women, the market leaders, and the professional bodies—to recognize their power in the democratic process,” the Commissioner stated. “A massive turnout does two critical things: it ensures that the eventual winner truly represents the will of the majority, and it strengthens the accountability of the government they elect.”

He noted that low voter turnout often leads to the election of candidates who may lack broad public support, which can undermine the government’s mandate and effectiveness.

Sustaining Development and Vision

The current administration highlighted the need for voters to select a successor who will not only sustain the current momentum in infrastructure, education, and healthcare but also introduce fresh, innovative ideas.

“The 2025 election is not just about changing personnel; it is about protecting and advancing the collective vision for a prosperous Anambra,” Mr. Mefor added. He urged the electorate to scrutinize the manifestos and track records of all aspirants, focusing on competence, integrity, and genuine commitment to the state’s welfare, rather than sentiments.

He stated, “Active participation in this election is particularly important to reverse the low voter turnout recorded during the 2021 governorship election, when only about 200,000 of the over 2.7 million registered voters exercised their franchise.”

The government also pledged its full cooperation with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to guarantee a peaceful, free, and fair electoral process.

INEC and Security Preparedness

In line with the government’s plea, the State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) assured the public of INEC’s readiness to deploy necessary resources to ensure a hitch-free poll. Measures being considered include improved logistics, the deployment of technology for result transmission, and targeted voter education initiatives to address apathy and combat misinformation.

The security apparatus in the state is also reportedly undergoing strategic planning to neutralize potential flashpoints, ensuring that voters feel safe enough to leave their homes and exercise their franchise on Election Day.

The final push from the government aims to mobilize at least 80% of registered voters, solidifying the state’s reputation as a politically conscious and active democratic unit. The message is clear: the future direction of the state will be decided by those who participate.
