The Kwara State Government has officially confirmed the death of Musa Banawa, a notorious kidnap kingpin widely known as Maidawa, in a precise airstrike conducted by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF). The operation marks a major success in the ongoing campaign to dismantle criminal networks operating in the border forests of Kwara, Niger, and Kogi states.
Details of the Operation
The confirmation was issued on Wednesday by the state’s Commissioner for Communications, who praised the synergy between the military, security agencies, and the state government.
Targeted Attack: Maidawa and his gang were reportedly tracked to a camp in the dense forest that straddles the boundaries between the states, an area that has long served as a safe haven for bandits and kidnappers.
Intelligence-Driven: The success of the operation was attributed to sophisticated intelligence gathering and surveillance. Security sources indicated that the camp was neutralized following credible intelligence about the convergence of high-profile gang leaders planning future attacks.
Casualties: While the primary target was Maidawa, the airstrikes are confirmed to have eliminated several other members of his criminal syndicate who were responsible for coordinating numerous high-profile kidnappings, cattle rustling, and violence across North Central Nigeria.

Significance of Maidawa’s Elimination
Maidawa was considered one of the most ruthless and elusive bandit leaders operating in the region. His group was notorious for:
Regularly ambushing travelers along major federal routes, particularly the notorious border stretch between Kwara and Niger states.
Kidnapping residents and commuters and demanding exorbitant ransoms, which fueled the cycle of terror and instability in local communities.
His activities led to the displacement of hundreds of farmers and herders from their ancestral lands, crippling agricultural output in the affected areas.
The Kwara State Government hailed Maidawa’s death as a huge morale boost for local communities and security operatives. They urged residents to remain vigilant and continue to provide crucial information to security agencies to help sustain the momentum against banditry.
The NAF and other joint security task forces have intensified their aerial and ground operations in these contiguous forests, indicating a reinforced commitment to clearing out the criminal strongholds and restoring peace and security across the North Central region.
