The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, recently held a closed-door reconciliation meeting with members of the Rivers State Elders Council and other key political figures in Port Harcourt.

The meeting was held on a Saturday night (October 5, 2025) at the Port Harcourt residence of the Chairman of the Rivers State Elders Council, Chief Ferdinand Alabraba.

Nyesom Wike (FCT Minister and former Governor), Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers State Governor), Chief Ferdinand Alabraba (Chairman, Rivers State Elders Council), Martins Amaewhule (Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly)

And other prominent politicians, including members of the Rivers caucus in the National Assembly (Senators and House of Representatives members), former state officials, and leaders of both the PDP and APC in the state.

While details of the meeting were not disclosed, the presence of key political figures suggests ongoing efforts to foster cohesion and stability within the Rivers political structure.

The LeadWay gathers that among other interests the primary goal of the meeting was to consolidate the peace and reconciliation efforts in the state following a period of political tension and crisis, which included a six-month state of emergency. It was described by some attendees as a move toward the “full unification” of Wike’s political family in Rivers State.

While no official statement was released detailing the specific decisions, sources indicated the discussions focused on:

  1. Working together for the peace and development of Rivers State.
  2. Resolving “grey areas” in earlier reconciliation efforts.
  3. Advising Governor Fubara to hold consultations with the elders, lawmakers, and political party leadership.
  4. Discussions around future political appointments, including the submission of a new list of commissioner-nominees to the State House of Assembly.

Sources suggested that the return of Edison Ehie to the position of Chief of Staff was foreclosed.

The meeting was widely seen as a significant step in upholding the peace accord that had been reached previously under the intervention of President Bola Tinubu. It was also noted by some media outlets that the attendees largely comprised those loyal to the FCT Minister, which reportedly caused anxiety among some of Governor Fubara’s close allies.
